AVOH funded the construction of the church in Kapuka, a remote village in Zambia, using the building as the school house at its current location, however we have quickly outgrown the space and have resorted to renting nearby buildings recently constructed by the village leaders.
Kapuka Village is a remote village six kilometers (about 9.5 miles) from Chongwe. There are no paved roads to get to the village, only dirt roads in poor condition. During the rainy season, the road to Kapuka is not passable. You cannot drive all the way to the village; you must leave your car in Chongwe and walk 6 kilometers to the school location. There is a small river just before reaching the school, with no bridge or walking path to cross. This isolates the school until the rains have finally stopped.
The AVOH School at Kapuka is the only school in this remote area. Children walk from miles around to attend this school. During the rainy season, children are sometimes not able to make it to school due to the distance and conditions that must be overcome. If our school was not present in this area, the next closest school is in Chongwe. Children who live the opposite direction would never go that far, especially during the rainy season, to attend classes.
AVOH supports over 120 children enrolled in Grade 1 through Grade 4 at the Kapuka campus, as well as:
- 6 Teachers
- 1 Principal
- 2 Cooks
- Care Taker
