AVOH Chingola is in Northern Zambia, in the Copperbelt, almost to the DR Congo border. The school serves the communities of Chingola and Solwezi.
Chingola and Solwezi are both mining towns. Due to the sale of mines by the government to private organizations, things have not worked out for the mining sector in the country. As soon as a mine is sold, it is stripped of virtually all machinery and eventually it is closed. The closing of a mine adds to the countries despair, as the miner now has no way to provide for his family. The miner used to be deemed as the highest paid worker in this area. Children are thereby needed in most cases to help make ends meet. With the mining trend spiraling downward, affecting lives in the local communities and in the country as a whole, there has been an increase in HIV/AIDS in these areas as well.
We are currently renting space to hold classes in these communities.
AVOH supports over 55 children enrolled in Grade 1 through Grade 4 at the Chingola campus, as well as:
- 1 Teacher
- 1 Teacher/Principal
